To begin practising Taijiquan, one should first learn the fundamentals of Taiji coordination. The Cloud Hands exercise exemplifies this, integrating hand and foot movements governed by internal hip rotations. When directional and rotational movements are combined, we automatically learn what is called Spiral Dynamics in the West.
The Purpose of Cloud Hands Forward
As the practitioner acquires relaxation, external movements become stabilised and directed by smaller inner motions. Although the fundamental structure appears simple and direct, all the simple movements combined result in a complex, full-body, three-dimensional flow. The ultimate aim of this practice is to comprehend the unity of mind and body and practice appropriate control over both.
As a martial arts exercise, practitioners learn to effectively employ their entire body for offensive manoeuvres. Stability through stances and efficient hand coordination is critical for executing combat techniques successfully.
How to Practice
Taijiquan should always manifest as a fluid, unceasing stream, effortlessly guiding practitioners from one posture to the next. This natural flow is facilitated by aligning one's centre of gravity over the toes and heels, enabling efficient weight and power transfer according to each situation. Hip rotations provide stability and ease of movement, allowing practitioners to develop power and relax simultaneously as they circulate internal energy (Qi) throughout their bodies. This facilitates greater control with reduced physical strain. When executing Taijiquan correctly, one's mind becomes empty, allowing intentions to guide practice effortlessly.
